A lot of laptop users, especially businessmen, travellers and students, can hardly imagine their life without the laptop. It is portable and can be taken aboard a ship to view movies or send/receive emails from co-workers or business partners. Yet, the laptops cannot function day and night. Every now and again the laptop battery needs to be re-charged. Hardly has any person thought about the first laptop batteries and their power. In fact, the history of laptop batteries is an exciting one. They have already come along way, but they still have a long way ahead to perfection. When we think of batteries for laptops, many of us think about the rechargeable ones that are used today. Still, in the past AA batteries were widely used in laptops. It took a great many AA batteries to run a laptop. Besides, it could not run for long. Some users remember the heavy lead acid based batteries that did not only last long, but also made a laptop very heavy-weight. The production of laptop batteries has been modified since then. Lead acid based batteries were substituted by lighter nickel cadmium batteries (NiCd). Nonetheless, these batteries were not deployed a lot, since there were introduced nickel metal hydride batteries (also known as NiMH). They lasted a lot longer and were lighter. Their drawback was that they possessed the so-called memory defect. If the battery had not discharged completely, it remembered it and its output was lower. A great step towards advancement in laptop batteries production was taken when lithium ion batteries (LiON) appeared on the market. These batteries are light and do not produce any memory effect. They are used in technically advanced models. Although LiON laptop batteries run for several hours non-stop, they require re-charging. Because more and more people get laptops annually, the demand for durable batteries is rapidly increasing. Definitely, there will be improvements until batteries that never go dead are made. Regardless of the purpose you use a portable computer for, you know that you require a long-lasting battery. You have to know the battery will not go dead when you need your portable computer most of all. |
